Blackburn Architects has designed equestrian facilities for 40 years. Last fall we collaborated with them to make a film about it. They put it on their About page, where every prospective client ends up, and it’s been working there ever since.
Here’s how it was made.
Founder John Blackburn revolutionized barn design using aerodynamic principles and natural ventilation to create structures where horse health and safety come first. He can explain the Bernoulli principle and the chimney effect in a way that makes you lean in, not check out. It’s not marketing copy. His passion is the foundation of everything Blackburn builds.
We traveled to Virginia and Washington, D.C., to tell that story.

We interviewed John, his clients, and the team who bring the vision to life. We captured the barns themselves, the details that make them work, and the relationships that make the projects possible. Nobody read lines. Kevin Christensen directed, and you won’t hear a single one of his questions in the finished films, which is the point.
We let John tell his story without a script, made room for his insights and anecdotes about founding the firm, then wove them together with client testimonials and visual evidence of the work itself. Montie Blackburn, the firm’s Chief of Staff, watched it happen from inside a creative firm of her own.
As a creative firm ourselves, we understand that collaborating with another creative team can sometimes be challenging but this experience couldn’t have been easier. Storyteller brought incredible energy, flexibility, and enthusiasm to every step of the process. That kind of positivity makes a world of difference. What stood out most was how they let our founder, John Blackburn, truly tell his story. He’s full of insight and anecdotes about the founding of the firm, and Storyteller created space for him to share freely and then absorbed it all with genuine curiosity and care.

A fundraising film typically gets judged in a single night. A brand film gets judged where it ends up living. Blackburn put theirs at the front door of the firm’s identity, the About page, where it works on every prospective client who comes looking for proof.
When we first saw it, we were amazed at how seamlessly the Storyteller team wove our story together in such an impactful way. Everyone who’s seen it has been genuinely impressed, not only by the quality of the film but by how clearly it communicates the essence of our brand. It’s beautifully executed and tells our story with authenticity and emotion.

Watch the film now:
The About page was never the whole delivery. One shoot produced five films, each with a job:
Each format keeps the story while adapting to where audiences are watching.
Great client relationships aren’t built on a single project. Phase two took us to California this spring, multiple locations, new footage capturing the range and depth of Blackburn’s work across the country. Phase three is already taking shape, with east coast shoots planned for the fall. Montie saw it coming before a single new frame existed.
We’re eager to capture more impactful imagery of our most distinctive projects across the country. The Storyteller team did an exceptional job showcasing a small selection of our work during the initial shoot and it only made us more excited to see what’s possible when we expand that scope. We can’t wait to build on what’s already been created and further showcase the depth and range of our work.

The client came back, and the cameras went back out. Dometic Marine ran the same pattern, and we’re starting to think it’s the method.
